General Safety Guidelines
Plan Your Route
Always research your destination beforehand. Know the trail difficulty, distance, and estimated time. Share your plans with someone who isn't going.
Check the Weather
Review the forecast before heading out. Be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially in elevated areas or near water.
Tell Someone
Let a friend or family member know your plans, including where you're going and when you expect to return.
Carry a Charged Phone
Keep your phone fully charged. Consider carrying a portable charger for longer trips. Download offline maps in advance.
Know Your Limits
Choose activities that match your fitness level and experience. It's okay to turn back if conditions become challenging.
Stay on Marked Trails
Stick to designated paths and trails. Venturing off-trail can lead to getting lost and damages natural habitats.
City Hiking Safety
Wear Proper Footwear
Choose sturdy, comfortable shoes with good traction. Avoid flip-flops or sandals on uneven terrain.
Bring Enough Water
Carry at least 0.5 liters of water per hour of hiking. More in hot weather. Dehydration can happen quickly.
Pack Light but Smart
Bring essentials: water, snacks, first aid kit, sunscreen, and a light jacket. Don't overpack but be prepared.
Watch Your Step
Urban trails can have uneven surfaces, loose gravel, or wet spots. Stay alert and watch where you're walking.
Start Early
Begin your hike in the morning to avoid midday heat and ensure you have plenty of daylight to complete your route.
Weather Awareness
Sun Protection
Apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every 2 hours. Wear a hat and sunglasses.
Heat Safety
In temperatures above 85°F (29°C), take frequent breaks in shade. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating.
Rain Preparedness
Pack a lightweight rain jacket even if the forecast looks clear. Wet conditions make trails slippery.
Lightning Safety
If you hear thunder, seek shelter immediately. Avoid open areas, tall trees, and water bodies during storms.
Nature & Wildlife
Leave No Trace
Pack out all trash. Don't pick plants or disturb wildlife. Leave natural areas as you found them for others to enjoy.
Insect Protection
Use insect repellent in wooded areas. Check for ticks after your trip. Wear long sleeves in areas with mosquitoes.
Wildlife Distance
Observe animals from a safe distance. Never feed wildlife. If you encounter a larger animal, remain calm and back away slowly.
Plant Awareness
Learn to identify poison ivy, oak, and sumac. If unsure about a plant, don't touch it. Wash skin immediately if contact occurs.
Basic First Aid
Know how to handle common minor injuries. For serious injuries, always seek professional medical help.
